What LandedHQ is
LandedHQ is a planning and estimation tool. It retrieves live duty rate data from HMRC's publicly available Trade Tariff API and calculates an estimated landed cost based on the information you enter. It is designed to help UK importers understand their likely import costs before placing orders, so they can price their products correctly and protect their margins.
It is not a customs declaration service, and it is not professional customs, legal, or tax advice.
What our calculations can and cannot do
- ✓Can do: Retrieve the standard (MFN) or preferential duty rate for a commodity code and country of origin from HMRC's Trade Tariff.
- ✓Can do: Calculate an estimated customs duty and import VAT based on the cost, quantity, and shipping information you provide.
- ✓Can do: Suggest a likely commodity code based on a plain English product description using AI (for guidance only).
- ✓Can do: Alert you when HMRC updates a rate that affects your saved products.
- ✗Cannot do: Definitively classify your goods under the UK Tariff. Classification depends on the precise composition, manufacture, and intended use of a product. The correct code may not always be the one our AI suggests.
- ✗Cannot do: Determine whether your goods qualify for a preferential duty rate. Zero or reduced rates under DCTS, TCA, and other preferences depend on rules of origin — the origin of materials and the manufacturing process — which we cannot verify.
- ✗Cannot do: Account for anti-dumping or countervailing duties. These are additional duties applied to specific goods from specific countries and are not always reflected in standard commodity code rates.
- ✗Cannot do: Calculate excise duty. Goods subject to excise (alcohol, tobacco, fuel, etc.) require separate treatment not covered by this tool.
- ✗Cannot do: Calculate customs duty on the exact basis HMRC will use. HMRC calculates duty on the customs value, which follows specific valuation rules (WTO customs valuation agreement) and may differ from your invoice value.
- ✗Cannot do: Guarantee that displayed rates are current at the exact moment you use the tool. HMRC updates its Trade Tariff periodically, and there may be a short lag between official updates and our data.
AI commodity code suggestions
When you use the "AI commodity code finder" feature, your product description is sent to an AI language model (Claude by Anthropic) which returns a suggested HMRC commodity code. These suggestions are based on the AI's training and the text you provide. They are starting points for your own research — not authoritative classifications.
Tariff rate accuracy
Duty rates are retrieved from the HMRC Trade Tariff API, which is the same data source used by UK importers and customs agents. We refresh our cached rates at least every 24 hours.
However, we cannot guarantee that rates displayed are accurate at all times. HMRC may publish updated rates that take time to be reflected in our system. Always verify the current rate on the official HMRC Trade Tariff before making a customs declaration or committing to a commercial transaction.
